Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
